Wireless doorbells are an everyday sign of the constantly developing technology we are all so used to seeing. In the not too distant past a visitor would have needed to use a door knocker or their own hand to get the attention of a homeowner. Now with the press of a single button they are able to make their presence known with the use of radio waves – most of the time without even realising! Here are some of the current best selling models.

There are several different parts which make up a wireless doorbell system. There is the doorbell button itself which is connected to a transmitter. The transmitter sends a signal to a receiving device which is installed inside of a home, this then produces the sound which will hopefully get the homeowner’s attention. Many systems will be capable of producing various different sounds which can be changed at any time. A wireless door chime, buzzer or bell will be the most common options, although more musical devices are also available.

The main advantage of using wireless door chimes is their ease of installation. With no wires required, the average homeowner will be capable of setting up one of these devices themselves in very little time. For the greatest convenience, a plug in wireless door chime kit can be purchased. These kits will work as soon as the receiver is plugged into a power socket and the button is installed on the door of your home, a very easy process indeed. If you do not think the use of wireless door bells justifies giving up a power socket then you can always use a battery powered model. These will typically not perform as well but will be more than adequate for most home owners.

If you are considering the purchase of a new doorbell, wireless models should definitely be on your shortlist. There are however a few limitations that need to be mentioned. Sometimes a doorbells wireless technology can be fooled by other devices such as car or garage alarms or key-fobs. The cheaper models are particularly susceptible to these kinds of problems. Some people are also concerned with wireless signals being transmitted throughout their homes. Opinion is still divided on whether these kinds of devices pose any real health risks, but some customers will have legitimate concerns. Of all the wireless equipment we currently use such as computers and cell phones, doorbells contain some of the weakest signals, so any risks should be minimal. Much more information about these products can be found here at wireless doorbells UK, so you should be able to decide what kind of doorbell is right for you and your home.

When choosing a new or replacement door bell for your home there are many different options available to you. The specific model you choose will depend on a number of factors including your personal tastes, your budget and the type of building where the device will be used. Here are some of the current best sellers.

There are many different designs currently available such as the remote door chime or a manual model. You will need to do some research before buying any one model.

When you purchase door chimes, bells or buzzers you will need to think about whether you can run wires in your home or whether a wireless system would best suit you. If you already have a door chime that is wired in then you should be able to upgrade it fairly easily, without the need for a complete re-wiring, unless it is so faulty that the whole system needs replacing.

Wired door chimes offer more consistency that wireless ones, but the latter are more convenient and easier to install. Wireless systems can sometimes fail or may be interrupted by other devices that also use radio waves such as garage door openers or electronic car keys. To minimize the risk of this happening try to purchase a wireless system that has multiple frequencies, or stick to wired chimes.

Think about what you want your doorbell chimes to look like. It must fit in with the décor currently in place on the exterior of your home. The type of property should also be considered here. For example, a shop door chime will look different to one used in a private residence.

There are many different options when it comes to door chime sounds . . . Buzzer, bell, chime, melody or even MP3 – which one would best suit you and your home? Many models will offer changeable melodies or songs think about whether this would be an option worth taking. It is also possible to upload your own electronic music to some door chime systems, these products are obviously more expensive than most.

Simplicity is also important. Will you be able to fit new door chime parts to your system if it breaks down? If you choose one of the more complex options then this may not be possible without professional help.

A lot needs to be considered but there is a great collection of further information here at Door chimes UK, which will help you to choose the best bell, chime or buzzer for your home.

When people are visiting your home for the first time, the doorbell button will be one of the first things they see. Doorbells play an important role in creating a first impression of your property. Here are some of the best selling doorbell plus button packages.

Wired and Wireless

The range of buttons available to you will depend on whether you have a wired or a wireless doorbell system. There are far more doorbell buttons produced for the wired devices which have been around longer, and so are more popular. As more and more wireless systems are being produced, the number of wireless doorbell button options will obviously increase as well. As of now there is a good selection available for both types of bell.

Its Your Choice

Try to remember that a doorbell push button is something that you will be seeing almost every day. You should therefore put considerable time and effort into choosing a button that you like, and one that matches the look of your home. Try not to compromise on a design just to save time or money. Because the range of products is so wide, with enough research and shopping around, anyone should be able to find multiple doorbell push buttons that suit their individual tastes.

The Styles

A large number of different materials are used to produce doorbell buttons with different looks. You will often see products made from brass, bronze, silver, chrome and nickel, as well as many different plastics.

A whole range of shapes are also used, the most common being circular, oval and rectangular. These shapes will often incorporate specific designs such as flowers, fruits and animals. Most will however be generic designs such as classic looking antique buttons, or stylish modern ones.

There are also more advanced options available. Many doorbells will have some kind of LED installed that will light up when the doorbell switch is activated. This is particularly useful where the chime is not situated close to the door inside the property, and so the operator may not be able to hear the bell when it rings. A lighted doorbell button is a feature that is becoming more and more popular with the modern designs.

Prices

You can really pay whatever you want for one of these products. A low end plastic model can be purchased for less than £10, whereas a brass doorbell button may cost over £50. We would encourage spending a little money just because a doorbell button will be in a prominent location right next to your front door, so you do not want it to look cheap. It is really up to you though and the most important consideration is whether you like the design yourself. Looking around online is the best way to get an idea of what you can get for your money.

Installing a musical doorbell or chime in your home is a great way to add a personal touch that is sure to keep your guests entertained, and to create positive first impression. The range of doorbells currently available gives you complete freedom when it comes to choosing the sound that will welcome people to your home. Here are some of the best selling musical door chimes.

The Options

Musical door bells, as their name implies, have the ability to play melodies or full digitally recorded songs when the bell is activated. Most models will come with a range of preset melodies that you can select from the control unit. These will often be basic tunes and sound similar to polyphonic ringtones, which were popular before mp3 technology made its way on to mobile phones. Some will be random and unrecognisable whereas others will play the notes of famous pop tracks. These types of musical doorbells are popular, but some users find the actual sounds slightly annoying.

MP3

The most advanced musical door chimes will operate in a similar way to an mp3 player. You can easily upload digital audio files to an mp3 doorbell, meaning that when the bell is activated a full song will be played. This will be a complete track, rather than a polyphonic sound that just plays a recognisable melody or hook. The best musical doorbells will come complete with good quality speaker systems so when a track is played, it will sound similar to when it is played on a computer or mp3 player. These systems obviously give you great freedom to choose your doorbell’s ‘ring tone’, and to change it at will. Many people like to upload seasonal audio files to their doorbell at Christmas time and Halloween, as well as at other times throughout the year. You can also surprise a guest or family member with ‘happy birthday’ on the appropriate day.

Designs and Installation

Musical and novelty door bells come in a wide range of designs. Most of them are modern, as these systems are fairly new. You can however purchase the latest models in more traditional designs. No matter what your individual tastes may be, you should be able to find a musical doorbell that complements the look of your home.

It is fairly easy to install a musical door chime system. Most will be wireless, meaning that any homeowner will be able to complete the setup themselves. You should be able to install and configure the device in an hour or two.

A cordless doorbell or chime makes use of radio waves rather than wires to form a connection between the button and the actual bell. Many homeowners choose cordless options when replacing doorbells as they are quick and easy to install, they are also reasonably priced – you can pick up a good model for less than $20. Many home owners will however choose a more expensive model as the cheaper ones can look unattractive and, well, cheap. Here are some of the best sellers.

Cordless doorbells will always have a maximum range which is the distance between a transmitter and a receiver. This is often advertised as being between 100 and 500 feet. In reality, walls and other obstructions will limit this distance to around one third of the advertised figure, so this fact will need to be kept in mind when choosing a bell. Some units are plug in door chimes that will need the power from a wall socket, while others are completely portable.

Configurations

There are different cordless door chime setups that you can choose for your home. The most common will have either one or two switches with a single bell, or a single switch with two bells. The best configuration for you will depend on how many entrances to your home will need doorbell switches, and whether you are going to need multiple bells to ring in different parts of the property at the same time.

The All Important Switch

You will want to choose cordless door bells with switches that give some indication to the operator that the bell has been triggered. Either a click or an LED will usually do the trick. A switch can be installed the quick and easy way using a sticky pad or tape, or the more time consuming but reliable way, using screws. Obviously the latter will require some drilling into a doorframe or wall, this is however necessary to ensure that a switch is mounted as securely as possible. If you use sticky tape or pads to hold the switches for your cordless door chimes in place, they will be much more likely to come loose, or even fall off.

Receivers and Chimes

A modern doorbell will play digital recordings through speakers rather than using actual bells. This gives a homeowner many different chimes to choose from, including special chimes designed for the hard of hearing. Modern door chimes also allow for volume control. Many will have some kind of visual signal as well as an audio one such as an LED, or a connection with a table lamp that will light up when the doorbell rings.

A receiver will either be a mobile, battery powered unit, or a plug in door chime powered by mains electricity. Some designs will also use a combination of these methods for receiving power. Plug in door bells cannot be moved around as freely as battery powered ones as they will always need a wall socket, however they do not have any batteries that will need replacing which will be an advantage for some homeowners.

It is important to make sure that your bell has an attractive sound and is working effectively. Here are some of the best selling wired models.

It is fairly easy to install a doorbell yourself if you have some basic DIY experience. Here we will give an overview of the steps you will need to follow when installing a replacement wired doorbell in your home.

Wiring

Unless your home was previously fitted with a wireless doorbell system, there will be some existing wiring in place that you can use when installing a new bell. Obviously you will need to be looking in the location where the wired door chime or bell was previously situated. If you do not know where this is, the front door is a good place to start looking. You will need to locate both ends of the doorbell wiring – where the button is to be installed and where the chime is located.

Transformer

Next you will need to locate the doorbell transformer. This will often be in some kind of cupboard or closet or high up on a wall in a location close to the chime. It could also be installed in a garage.

Whenever you are installing new wired door chimes you will need to test the transformer that is already in place. This can be done using a multi tester. You will typically expect to find up to 24 volts when performing the test. If there appears to be no power there will be a problem with either the power supply or the transformer itself. Obviously if the power supply is fine then you will need a replacement transformer. Make sure one wire is kept disconnected while you are completing the installation of wired door bells. Just reconnect it when you are finished.

The Button and Chime

Now you will want to install the door bell button at the entrance to your home. If you already have a chime in place, make sure the cover is removed. Any new chime should be placed where the previous one was, or where the wires are accessible.

Connections

Good connections are important to ensure that wired door bells function correctly, and will continue to do so – so take care when completing them. First connect a transformer wire to one button wire. The remaining transformer wire should now be connected to the wired door chimes. The free doorbell wire should be connected to the chime. If you have multiple bells, connect these to the remaining chime connection points.

Now all you need to do is test out your wired door bells. Place the chime cover back as you found it and complete the remaining connections to the transformer. Try out the buttons of any wired doorbells you have installed to make sure then are functioning correctly.

You will usually be informed by frustrated friends or family members who are wondering why you are suddenly refusing to answer your door and let them in!
When you do eventually realise there is a problem with your chime door system, it is useful to know the common causes and what can be done to rectify them.

Connections

Three of the most common reasons for a door entry chime failing are a burned out transformer, a loose connection or a physical breakage.

You can check a door chime transformer using a simple voltmeter. Allow the voltmeter leads to make contact with the pair of screws on the transformer. If no power is registered on the voltmeter then you have found your problem straight away – no power is being generated. Where the transformer is functioning correctly, you will often see around 16 volts registering on the voltmeter.

If there is no problem with the transformer then try checking the buttons. Remove the cover and disconnect the button’s wires. You can touch them together and listen out for the chime being activated. You can usually tell if there is a problem with the chime if when touching the wires against each other, you see a spark but hear no chime.

One way you can test to see if your current door chime button is broken is to buy another one and test it with your wiring. Any cheap door chime kit will be fine as it will only be used to diagnose the problem. If you wire up the new door chime and hear a sound when pressing the button, it is fairly obvious that there is a problem with the old chime.

Wiring

If after checking your doorbell and all the relevant connections you find no problems, your wiring should be looked at. This is especially true if the wiring is old and has not been replaced for some time. Unless you are familiar with diagnosing electrical and wiring problems, you should probably leave this kind of work to an expert. We will not attempt to tackle wiring issues in this article.

Replacement

If you cannot find out what is wrong with your door chime then it may be worthwhile to just purchase a new system. These products can be purchased very cheaply and are simple to install, this is particularly true for the wireless door entry chimes.

Nobody likes to be ignored, but this is exactly how your friends and family could feel if your door bell needs repairing or replacing and they are left standing on your door step. If you feel that you need a new one, many cheap door bells can be purchased from a whole range of different suppliers. Most models are manual door bells and can be installed by a homeowner with a small amount of DIY experience and some very basic tools. Remote door bells are also suitable for self installation the vast majority of the time. Here are some top selling models.

There are many different door bells and chimes currently available for sale, so anyone should be able to find multiple designs that fit both their tastes and their budget. If you have never had one of these devices you may want to start with a wireless door bell which can be plugged in and used almost instantly, without the need for any wiring. If you have a door bell already then it will be easier to install a new manual one using the wiring that is already in place than if you had to wire the device from scratch yourself.

If you are currently having problems hearing the door bell that is installed in your home then consider purchasing one of the special loud door bells currently on the market. These will emit a chime that you should be able to hear from quite a distance. Alternatively if you are using a wireless door bell system then you can purchase multiple chiming units to be placed at different locations within your home. They can be set so that the same signal from the door bell button will set them all off together.

If you would like to bring a light hearted feel to your home then you can always look into buying one the novelty or childrens door bells currently for sale. These devices will often be shaped like cartoon characters or animals. It is also common for them to come complete with comical sounds installed in their chiming systems which can be played when the door bell is activated. These can be used on the main entrance to your home or just as an interior bell on the wall outside of your childs bedroom. Most kids find them rather entertaining, especially when the chime can be chosen from a range of sounds they like.

Door bells can be purchased from a number of different retailers at very reasonable prices. Just have a look around here at door bells UK for much more information relating to door bell options, suppliers and prices.
