It is fairly easy to install a doorbell yourself if you have some basic DIY experience. Here we will give an overview of the steps you will need to follow when installing a replacement wired doorbell in your home.

Wiring

Unless your home was previously fitted with a wireless doorbell system, there will be some existing wiring in place that you can use when installing a new bell. Obviously you will need to be looking in the location where the wired door chime or bell was previously situated. If you do not know where this is, the front door is a good place to start looking. You will need to locate both ends of the doorbell wiring – where the button is to be installed and where the chime is located.

Transformer

Next you will need to locate the doorbell transformer. This will often be in some kind of cupboard or closet or high up on a wall in a location close to the chime. It could also be installed in a garage.

Whenever you are installing new wired door chimes you will need to test the transformer that is already in place. This can be done using a multi tester. You will typically expect to find up to 24 volts when performing the test. If there appears to be no power there will be a problem with either the power supply or the transformer itself. Obviously if the power supply is fine then you will need a replacement transformer. Make sure one wire is kept disconnected while you are completing the installation of wired door bells. When you do eventually realise there is a problem with your chime door system, it is useful to know the common causes and what can be done to rectify them.

Connections

Three of the most common reasons for a door entry chime failing are a burned out transformer, a loose connection or a physical breakage.

You can check a door chime transformer using a simple voltmeter. Allow the voltmeter leads to make contact with the pair of screws on the transformer. If no power is registered on the voltmeter then you have found your problem straight away – no power is being generated. Where the transformer is functioning correctly, you will often see around 16 volts registering on the voltmeter.

If there is no problem with the transformer then try checking the buttons. Remove the cover and disconnect the button’s wires. You can touch them together and listen out for the chime being activated. You can usually tell if there is a problem with the chime if when touching the wires against each other, you see a spark but hear no chime.

One way you can test to see if your current door chime button is broken is to buy another one and test it with your wiring. Any cheap door chime kit will be fine as it will only be used to diagnose the problem. If you wire up the new door chime and hear a sound when pressing the button, it is fairly obvious that there is a problem with the old chime.

Wiring

If after checking your doorbell and all the relevant connections you find no problems, your wiring should be looked at. This is especially true if the wiring is old and has not been replaced for some time. Unless you are familiar with diagnosing electrical and wiring problems, you should probably leave this kind of work to an expert. We will not attempt to tackle wiring issues in this article.

Replacement
